This is the story of John A. Lomax, the first man to bring such favorite American folk songs as "Home on the Range" and "Sweet Betsy from Pike" to the American people. When John was growing up in Texas, he was fascinated by the songs he'd learned from cowboys and he wrote them all down. Later, as a young adult, he was encouraged by a teacher to find more songs and compile them in a book. He set off on a cross-country trip with a cumbersome Ediphone recording device and convinced cowboys and gypsies to sing for him. He was able to record and preserve hundreds of songs for people then and for future generations to enjoy and learn about life then in the West.
